The Balloon Endometrial Ablation Option
Defined Tag: Balloon Endometrial Ablation. For women whose menstrual cycle is far too heavy, there are several alternatives to try before turning to surgery as the final option. To begin with, there are medication treatments which include anti-inflammatories and birth control pills. Or the woman’s health care provider may instead try an intra-uterine contraceptive device, which releases hormones while being used. Either of these alternatives may help the problem, but if they do not the next step is surgery. One type of surgery that is often considered is a balloon endometrial ablation. This is not the only ablation treatment possible; the surgeon may choose to use microwaves or a freezing procedure to destroy the uterine lining. But this one works just fine and has a relatively good success rate. The balloon endometrial ablation procedure is accomplished by inserting a catheter into the womb. This catheter has a fluid inside it that will be heated up for just less than ten minutes. When the time is up, the fluid is removed and the catheter taken out. This simple procedure will then make a period like event occur a week to ten day later. After that, the patient will begin to have periods regularly, but they will not be as heavy. They will become lighter; though, for some, they will disappear all together. For women who would still like to have children, this is not the answer to their bleeding problems. Despite the possibility of conceiving being very unlikely, a woman should still use contraceptive, since a tubal pregnancy is still a risk. For many women, this alternative is the best one for them. It avoids the necessity for a complete hysterectomy, which many women prefer to avoid. Studies have been conducted that show that those who have had the balloon endometrial ablation procedure have avoided the prospect of requiring a hysterectomy five years after the surgery was done. It is important when deciding is this procedure is the right one for a woman to see a specialist. She should not settle for the opinion of her general health care provider; they are not experienced enough in this field of medicine to give this advice.
