Thermal Endometrial Ablation Pros and Cons

For women who are bleeding heavier than they should during their menstrual cycles, they must decide what they are going to do to stop this unhealthy situation. There are simple measures that can be tried with a mix of birth control pills and anti-inflammatories. Or there are drastic measures that can be taken, like a woman having a complete hysterectomy. But there are also solutions that fall in between the two extremes. One of these solutions is a procedure called thermal endometrial ablation. In this procedure, a balloon is placed, using a catheter, inside the uterus. Next the balloon has a fluid put into it which is then heated. The fluid is usually heated to approximately eighty seven degrees Celsius. The liquid is left there for about eight minutes before being removed. After the eight minutes, the lining of the womb will have been destroyed.
This destruction of the endometrial lining is the key to ending the heavy bleeding a woman might be experiencing.

But, if the cause of the bleeding can be related back to fibroids in the uterus, then the thermal endometrial ablation will not be a successful cure. As well, this is not the solution to the problem if a woman still wants to have children. This procedure will almost undoubtedly prevent that from happening. Thirty three percent of women do not have periods after this procedure has been done while the other sixty six percent have lighter periods. The results can take up to three months before it is known if the procedure was successful.

This surgical procedure can have some potential side effects so like all medical procedures it must be carefully considered. The thermal endometrial ablation can result in electrosurgical burns, uterine puncture, hemorrhaging, infection or the most dangerous side effect; fluid overload. This can result in cardiac failure, high blood pressure, pulmonary or brain edema, coma or even death. As well, because the shape of the balloon does not necessarily slip into the corners of the uterus and there are parts that do are not necessarily get as hot there can be tissue left in those areas and so there might be some unexpected bleeding or cramping. Sometimes the procedure will have to be redone for these reasons.
