Which type of Endometrial Ablation Surgery is the Right Choice?

Endometrial ablation surgery is a choice made by women who must deal with the problem of excessive heavy bleeding during menstrual cycles. But this surgery is never the first choice in a treatment program. First the health care provider will get their patient to see a specialist. Likely the specialist will then recommend drug therapy as the first choice. This means using a low dose birth control pill to see if it can control the bleeding. The next step may be the suggestion of an intrauterine device that will also release hormones. This often is successful. But if it is not and the other alternatives have been considered then the only thing left to do is an ablation. But even this option has several possibilities to choose from.

The balloon or thermal ablation procedure is one where a balloon is inserted into the uterus and then it is filled with a liquid that is heated to eighty seven degrees Celsius for eight minutes. This burns the lining of the uterus and should stop the bleeding. Other endometrial ablation surgery is often divided into first and second generation treatments. These first generation treatments need the ability for the skilled surgeon to be able to see clearly what they are doing. A hysteroscope is used for this purpose. Then either a Transcervical Resection of the Endometrium and/or Rollerball Endometrial Ablation is performed. Either method has fairly good results and is considered a safe procedure to perform to solve the excessive bleeding issue. Sometimes they are both done at the same time to increase the chances of success. But there are problems that can occur with either procedure including perforation and hemorrhaging.

The second generation of endometrial ablation surgery options is safer, faster and simpler to perform. These include microwave endometrial ablation which is known to destroy the lining with microwave energy. This method has a very high success rate with ninety six percent of women seeing a decrease in bleeding or a cessation of menstrual cycles altogether. Not only that, but the procedure takes under five minutes to do. It also has a fast recovery time with most women able to return to work within a couple of days and go back to their normal routines with ease.
